Side Turkey

Side - TurkeyThe holiday resort of Side is situated on a promontory resting between two nice sandy beaches on the Mediterranean Coast of Turkey often referred to as the Turkish Riviera. The harbour at Side is perfect for relaxing with a cold Efes at one of the bars, cafes or restaurants situated at the harbour. Being only about 50 miles from the Antalya International Airport, Side is in the midst of some of the best golf courses in Turkey as well as being in close proximity to Manavgat and the ruins of Aspendos. Side is not only a resort town but a classical historic site of Pamphylia. In 1895 Turkish Muslim refugees from Crete moved to the ruined town and called it Selimiye. Upon developing tourism back a couple of decades ago, the village of Selimiye was renamed to Side, the same as the Roman city formerly located on the site of the village was known by in antiquity. Today Side is one of the few sites where you can see well-preserved Roman ruins and modern tourism facilities literally side by side. Side prospered under the Romans and much of the old Roman city walls are still intact. During the Roman occupation it was alledgedly the location for secret rendezvous of Anthony and Cleopatra. Today Side has become a popular holiday resort with a good mix of the old and the new with shops bars and restaurants along streets from antiquity.

Alexander the Great occupied Side without a struggle in 333 BC. Upon leaving the city he left only a single garrison behind to occupy the city. This occupation, in turn, introduced the people of Side to Hellenistic culture, which flourished from the 4th to the 1st century BC. After the death of Alexander, Side fell under the control of one of his generals, Ptolemy I Soter, who declared himself King of Egypt in 305 BC. The Ptolemaic dynasty controlled Side until it was captured by the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BC. Yet, despite these occupations, Side managed to preserve some autonomy, grew prosperous, and became an important cultural centre. In 190 BC a fleet from the Greek island city-state of Rhodes, supported by Rome and Pergamum, defeated the fleet of Seleucid King Antiochus the Great, which was under the command of the fugitive Carthaginian general Hannibal. The defeat of Hannibal and Antiochus the Great meant that Side freed itself from the overlord-ship of the Seleucid Empire. The Treaty of Apamea in 188 BC. forced Antiochus to abandon all European territories and to cede all of Asia Minor north of the Taurus Mountains to Pergamum. However, the dominion of Pergamum only reached de facto as far as Perga, leaving Eastern Pamphylia in a state of uncertain freedom. This led Attalus II Philadelphus to construct a new harbour in the city of Attalia, present day Antalya, although Side already possessed an important harbour of its own.
